“OK Boomer” isn’t about your age, and not every baby boomer generation member is being called this. Some GenX folks are called “boomers”, and kids will even use it to describe racist, entitled, climate change denying trust fund babies their own age who think they “did it all themselves” while walking around like being born white and rich didnt give them advantages.
It’s about people who:
Didnt have to be latchkey kids
Could afford college on part time minimum wage without debt with 14% interest that is more than the cost of a house and will never be paid off no matter how hard they work, and is protected from bankruptcy laws.
Who’s degrees mattered and could be used to actually get them a job that pays more than a job that doesnt require a degree.
Who could afford to support a family of four with one working parent
Who could start a business without being crushed by corporations like wal-mart and Amazon immediately
Who could afford a car that functions (which today runs you about 10 grand, which is why 18 year olds in GenZ don’t even have their drivers licenses)
Who didn’t have cable, phone, and internet bills that add up to as much or more than your rent, didn’t need a computer/laptop to function in work and life, and didn’t have to buy a $400-$1000 phone every 2 years because the corporations (owned by boomers) who make them, and deliberately destroy them with “updates” every year.
Who are destroying the environment for profit and won’t be around when it starts killing people who are young today.
Who are sending 18-25 year olds off to die for their never ending wars for oil and profit.
Who could play outside without wearing armor and a GPS tracker.
Who didn’t learn to hide in closets from active shooters in school, and didn’t feel like going to school was risking their lives every day.
Who had an education, rather than a prison when they went to public school.
Who weren’t prescribed medicine for displaying creativity, and didn’t need amphetamines to stay awake in college while working full time.
Who didn’t have an anxiety and suicide epidemic due to their life prospects.
Who are religious and trying to pass religious laws that affect young people’s lives but not their own.
Who today have an effective tax rate that is lower than someone making minimum wage and paying sales tax on things they need to survive scraping by paycheck to paycheck.
Who voted for representatives rather than rulers that only represent the wealthy who seem to be all Boomers.
Who are more racist now than they were in the 60s and can’t handle the fact that globalism isn’t going away ever.
Who could afford healthcare and had benefits at their jobs like paid vacation, and maternity/paternity leave (not to mention weekends), and unions that didnt work against them as part of the corporations.
Who then claim that people dealing with all those issues are just whining, “entitled” or lazy, while hoarding wealth they inherited or made from their privilege in offshore bank accounts and/or using it to pay people in China slave wages, while deliberately creating market bubbles and then crashing the economy so they can profit from buying high, selling low, stealing “bail-out” money they don’t need from the tax payers who actually suffer from the crashes, steal our pensions, steal our social security we have paid into, and also stealing houses out from under the people who have all those issues above with foreclosures they caused…
That’s basically the life of a 25 year old today… and they are tired of hearing old white people say they are “just lazy” or “entitled” or “socialist”. The reason they won’t vote is because they know Andrew Yang is ahead in the polls by all voters under 30 by over 30%, which means he would win easily in the general election (and they know already that the media won’t cover anything related to any of their candidates, or their issues, because they are all owned by giant boomer corporations that won’t cover Yang or Sanders)… and these young people know they won’t get a candidate who fights for or even represents them because even if they win in the Primaries the DNC will pull a Hillary anyway… and run a corrupt candidate working for the boomer corporations and banks, or themselves, and not even think about people trying to have the kind of life Americans have enjoyed since the end of WWII which this generation knowns they will never achieve unless they become a famous athlete, or entertainer.
The majority of Millenials and Generation Z don’t care about sexual orientation, gender, race, bathrooms, gay cakes, and religion… most of them have gay friends and trans friends and friends of various races and don’t even think about it. The children of GenX cares about paying taxes that in no way benefit them, having representatives that don’t care about them, not being able to afford a home, food, car, electricity, marriage, healthcare and maybe some day even consider having children. They are worried about the planet that is on fire and dying and debts they are inheriting from a generation living on credit like it’s a blank check they are forced to sign with their future. They don’t care about the 2nd Amendment because they know they will never be able to fight their already tyrannical government that is an oligarchy headed towards dictatorship, they want bullets to stop flying at their heads fired by people with mental illness when they go to night clubs or school or concerts. They don’t want to be $200K in debt at age 21 without a house, car, while walking around with a degree they can’t use to find work.
GenX has these kids still living with them… because we don’t get who we voted for either, even though we have voted since we were 20 years old.
So guess what Boomer… stop acting like you are being put down by a word, and wake up to what’s happening to your grandchildren and why they don’t “respect their elders”. Your generation fought to end wars you now run for profit, women’s rights you now repress for your religion (or ignore the repression of), and an end to segregation and Jim Crow but don’t stop the racists once in office or the Nazi terrorists marching in the streets with AR15s strapped on their backs.
Republicans obviously fight against the youth… but Democrats are weak and stupid and won’t fight for them either, and have an incessant need to run the worst candidate (if they cared, this election would be head to head between Sanders and Yang, and Biden and Warren would have been out of the race months ago). So just stop… You don’t have a right to be angry with them, and they have every right to have a revolution, and GenX should be funding it.
